The ISM Trust launches the ISM Teachers’ Pack

The Incorporated Society of Musicians’ charitable arm the ISM Trust has launched the ISM Teachers’ Pack as part of the award-winning Make Music Work advice series. The Make Music Work series comprises events and free resources to help and enable musicians to build successful and sustainable careers.

The ISM Teachers’ Pack is designed as a helpful guide for all instrumental and vocal teachers, whether they are employed, working freelance in schools or teaching privately. It covers issues which all music teachers need to know about, including finding work, setting rates, recovering unpaid fees, safeguarding, DBS checks and tax.

Deborah Annetts, Chief Executive of the Incorporated Society of Musicians, said:

‘The ISM Trust is pleased to launch the ISM Teachers’ Pack - with help from our Educators’ Special Interest Group – as another resource from the essential Make Music Work advice series which has been created to support musicians at all stages of their career.

The crucial work of our legal and business support teams here and from feedback from our 7,500 members uncovered a need for a dedicated advice resource for teachers at all stages of their career and employment models.

We believe that this resource will prove a vital, all-encompassing guide.’

Caroline Aldred, Business Support Officer and coordinator of the ISM Teachers’ Pack said:

‘It was clear from both the work that the legal and business support teams at the ISM undertake and the feedback that we received from ISM membership at grassroots level that we needed an advice pack dedicated to instrumental and vocal teachers.

Choosing the right employment model for you can be difficult, and navigating the tricky path of finding work, setting rates, uncovering unpaid fees, safeguarding, DBS checks and tax can feel almost impossible without appropriate professional advice.

This guide will help music teachers make informed decisions.’
