New ISM certificates for GCSE music attainment

Working with its sister charity, the ISM Trust, the Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM) is rewarding schools where a high proportion of pupils take GCSE music and secure an A*-C.

Schools where more than 10% of all pupils secured an A*-C in GCSE music have received a bronze certificate.

Schools where more than 15% of all pupils secured an A*-C in GCSE music have received a silver award and the 87 schools where more than 20% of all pupils secured an A*-C in GCSE music received a gold award.

The research also uncovered information around access, with 50 of the 87 schools securing a Gold certificate: 50 of these schools were private schools and a further 18 were selective (mostly grammar schools). Just 19 comprehensive schools had a more than 20% uptake and A*-C achievement in GCSE music.

Deborah Annetts, Chief Executive of the ISM welcomed the research saying:

‘Hard working music teachers – be they teaching in the classroom or working as instrumental and vocal teachers – are putting everything into delivering musical opportunities for children and young people in our schools.

‘It is crucial that we support them in every way possible and we hope that these certificates will offer some assistance in the battle to protect and promote a strong music curriculum in secondary schools.'

These results were based on figures from 2014/15.
